权力的游戏精读：你真的了解stump？
为难。麻烦别人的时候说一句Well, maybe I stumped you on that one. 是不是显得善解人意？ 另外stump 还指那些政客四处游说演说。The presidential candidates are on the stump today. [en]Ser Waymar shrugged. “You ought dress more warmly, Gared.”[/en][cn]威玛爵士耸耸肩道：“我说盖瑞，你该多穿两件衣服。”[/cn] ought to 的用法类似should，但语气更强。should是应当，而ought to 则指务必。在这里Ser Waymar的口语中省略了to。to 在这里不是介词，而是不定式。 [en]Gared glared at the lordling, the scars around his ear holes flushed red with anger where Maester Aemon had cut the ears away. “We’ll see how warm you can dress when the winter comes.” He pulled up his hood and hunched over his garron, silent and sullen.[/en][cn]盖瑞怒视着他的年轻长官，气得耳根发红。当年伊蒙学士把他坏死的耳朵割去，如今耳洞旁还留着伤疤。“等冬天真正来临时，看你能穿得多暖。”他拉起兜帽，缩着身子骑上马，阴沉地不再吭声。[/cn] flush 脸发红。flush 可作动词、形容词及名词。这里用的是动词词性，有一种动态的效果，脸色变红的过程。英语用词比较精确，flush是指因为生气或者尴尬难为情涨红了脸，是情绪的突然迅速释放，短时间大量涌出。而blush 则是指因为害羞而脸红。 flush还有一个用法是指冲马桶或者冲洗，引申为冲掉污秽，驱逐驱赶。还可以指短时间一夜暴富。 e.g.: At that time, many developing countries were flush with dollars earned from exports. 当时，许多发展中国家通过出口外贸获得了大量美元。 总之这个词的中心含义就是短时间，大量涌出释放。【阿天提示】把握住一个词汇的中心含义，再来理解它的其他含义就容易得多了，不要简单的背诵一个词有多少个含义。大家想想看，对于汉语字典里的字、词解释是否也是理解中心含义再扩展呢？这个是可以类比的。 hunch 卷曲着身子，蜷缩。 hunch over 则是指耷拉着肩膀，驼背。 家长总是提醒成长的孩子，Don’t hunch over when you walk. 所以我们才有了背背佳。 【阿天提示】不要望文生义，英语有很多动词短语的搭配，需要积累多使用。 sullen 面露愠怒，而且不想多说话。看看愠字怎么读？愠yùn。
