I know inside that my situation here is unique: I live in a better-than-average apartment and attend a fantastic language school. In addition, I have a relatively easy life with few trials, and for that I am thankful. I have reached outside of myself and met strangers who have become friends and met friends who have become family. I am thankful for the chance to come here and grow.

This week, I have been refocusing on my studies. My teachers and I have reached an equilibrium in workload, for which I am very relieved. I am progressing through the lessons at a nice pace and feel that in a few more lessons, I will have mastered the art of Chinese small talk. Speaking with cab drivers, waitresses and even students every day has helped me feel more and more confident in this language. I am picking up words I hear in random conversations, and I find I even understand the context. I am nowhere near perfect, though, and I have a long way to go before becoming fluent.
