Last year, Jonathan Zatkin, an American actor who lives in Beijing, posed as the vice president of an Italian jewelry company that had, [w]allegedly[/w], been in a partnership with a Chinese jewelry chain for a decade. Zatkin was paid 2,000 yuan (about $300) to fly, along with a couple of Russian models, to a small city in the central province of Henan where he delivered a speech for the grand opening ceremony of a jewelry store there. "I was up on stage with the mayor of the town, and I made a speech about how wonderful it was to work with the company for 10 years and how we were so proud of all of the work they had done for us in China," Zatkin said. The requirements for these jobs are simple. 1. Be white. 2. Do not speak any Chinese. 3. Pretend like you just got off of an airplane yesterday. Those who go for such [w=gig]gigs[/w] tend to be unemployed actors or models, part-time English teachers or other [w=expat]expats[/w] looking to earn a few extra [w=buck]bucks[/w]. Often they are jobs at a second- or third-tier city, where the presence of pale-faced foreigners is needed to impress local officials. Sharks are completely [w]colour-blind[/w] and only see things clearly if they are mostly light or dark, scientists have claimed. In a breakthrough that could prove hugely beneficial to divers navigating shark-filled waters, scientists found that the [w]predator[/w] - like dolphins, [w=seal]seals[/w] and whales - is unable to distinguish between colours. Costumes or wetsuits that [w]camouflage[/w] swimmers' bodies in the sea water are less likely to draw a shark's attention than ones with bright, solid colours than emphasise their outline. Professor Nathan Hart, from the University of Western Australia, said: 'It’s the high contrast against the water rather than the colour itself which is probably attractive to sharks. 'So you should wear perhaps more muted colours or colours that match the background in the water better.' The researchers examined the eyes of dead sharks and found they had only one type of [w]photoreceptor[/w] in the [w]retina[/w], indicating they could only see in [w]monochrome[/w]. The U.S. Navy has conducted tests that suggested sharks were able to see yellow most clearly. The tests had been to see what would be the best colour for the [w=lifejacket]lifejackets[/w] that pilots wear in case they have to [w]eject[/w] and [w]splash[/w] down in the ocean. Professor Hart said it was more the high contrast of yellow, not the colour itself, that would increase the [w]visibility[/w] for sharks.
