The lunar new year is the most important occasion for Chinese family reunions and celebrations. The tradition is observed by Chinese both at home and abroad. Let's find out how overseas Chinese marked the big day.

For Chinese people, wherever they are, the Lunar New Year is the biggest event of the calendar.

This year's festivities started in India on Saturday.

"Whatever where we are live in, we are Chinese. And we will have our Chinese new year... following our own tradition."

Like overseas Chinese in India, people gathered together every year to celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year in Thailand.

Watching CCTV's Gala has become the most important event for them.

"I was born in Thailand, but I am Chinese. Everyyear I watched the CCTV's Gala. I can't feel the festival atmosphere if there is no CCTV's Gala."

On the other side of the ocean, overseas Chinese get up early to watch the CCTV Gala in order to celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year.

It's early morning in the United States when Chinese mainland entering the Lunar New Year.

"Every year we get up earlier and watch the CCTV's Gala with my parents. We also made video tapes, so that we can watch it later whenever we want to do so."

(YOKOHAMA, JAPAN)

And the Chinese Lunar New Year also attracts many foreigners.

The Chinese community in Yokohama, Japan, is one of the largest in Asia.

Saturday night saw dragon and lion dances, and folk music performances.

A lantern show lit up the night with beautiful colors.

Overseas Chinese people gathered for the count down to welcome the year of Tiger.

Some local Japanese are also taking part in the celebration.

Yokohama Resident, said, "I feel good to celebrate the new year twice."

Yokohama Resident, said, "We hope good things happen in the new year, such as economic recovery, and happiness for families."

And in Thailand,Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium introduces underwater lion dance to celebrate Chinese lunar new year.

This is the first such attempt world wide.
