Chinese athletics megastar Liu Xiang has impressed thus far as he continues to return from injury and he will look to do the same at the East Asian Games next week as he goes for his third straight title at the games. But before Liu clears hurdles in Hong Kong, he first has to clear his medical.

Tom Clanton, the surgeon who successfully repaired Liu Xiang's injured foot last year, arrived in Shanghai to supervise Liu Xiang's preparations as he continues his recovery.

Clanton watched Liu Xiang's training after performing an MRI and an X-ray test on his foot.

The American doctor expressed his surprise after witnessing the progress Liu has made in his recovery and training.

Clanton then examined Liu's foot after the training by pressing and stretching his achilles tendon, looking for any damage that may exist.

Sun Haiping, Liu Xiang's Coach, said, "The doctor is well aware of where the surgery was done. He focused on recovery of the cut during his examination. "

Clanton had been recruited to be a part of Liu's medical care team, which will keep a close watch on his training and competitions over the next few years.

Liu Xiang, Chinese Hurdler, said, "I've been recovering and doing gradual training over the past year. I didn't think the recovery was going so fast. Although it still hurts a bit, the doctor said my recovery was far faster than expected. So I'm happy."

Liu will fly to Hong Kong next week to run in the men's 110 meters hurdlers next Friday, aiming for his third consecutive win at the event.
