14 Killed in New York Gunman Attack

Fourteen people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and at least four others wounded in a shooting rampage at an immigration center in Binghampton in New York State.

Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said the gunman entered the building of the American Civic Association, a non-governmental agency that provides services for immigrants and refugees. The gunman then started shooting at the people inside.

New York Governor David Paterson condemned the attack, describing the day as "tragic".

"We came down today to be here to express on behalf of all the citizens of the state and people around America, our profound outrage at a senseless act of violence in which innocent people were killed, injured and probably traumatised for some period of time."

In Baden-Baden, Germany, President Barack Obama said he was shocked and saddened by the shooting.

The Chinese Consulate-general in New York said a Chinese student was among those wounded.

The male student, who was taking a language course in the ACA building, suffered two gunshot wounds and is now in hospital. His injuries are not life threatening.
